Basics Overcoat
Folkwear
Description
Everyone should have a warm coat in their wardrobe, and this roomy, low-calf length Overcoat fits the bill perfectly.
Simple, un-lined construction, with built on sleeves (dolman-like) and a one-piece front placket, make this a quick coat to sew up. The roomy fit allows this coat to be layered over bulky winter clothing, and provides a fashionable look as well. The collar can be buttoned for a warm stand-up collar or can lay flat.
The large front placket can be buttoned either direction with big novelty buttons or plain and simple ones. You can add large snaps or even button-and-loops or frogs. The wide sleeves come nearly to the wrist and end in a wide and deep cuff. Make the cuff and/or collar from contrasting fabric (or even fur) for an interesting or dramatic look. The large pockets are essential for any coat and provide an opportunity for embellishment or use of a contrast fabric.
Sizes: XS–3XL
Suggested fabrics: Mid-weight fabric such as cotton twill, heavy-weight linen, silk noil or dupioni, wool, or a sturdy knit. Also, heavier-weight fabric in wool, denim, or canvas.
